The United States is often called a nation of immigrants, those who were born in another country but who’ve chosen to settle in the U.S. indefinitely. While this is accurate for some, it’s both simplistic for many, and it can limit our understanding of global politics and histories.
Instead, she argues that collecting stories from diaspora communities like Iranian Americans is an urgent and necessary undertaking. As the Workers Progress Administration did nearly a hundred years ago with the work of Zora Neale Huston, Joseph Lawrence, and Studs Turkel, we must do today to capture the nuance and complexity of both American and Iranian history. If we don’t these stories risk being lost forever.
