abdi-deljouAs the director of Iranian Refugees’ Alliance, Inc., Deljou Abadi has since 1993 authored many reports and articles on the conditions of Iranian refugees worldwide and represented many refugee claimants before the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the European Court of Human Rights. Her research on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s death penalty system began in mid 2000s and has since culminated in several submissions to UN Human Rights Council’s thematic and treaty-based mechanisms. In the past two years Abadi has authored several articles on the 1988 massacre of political prisoners in Iran as well as on the prosecution and trial proceedings of Hamid Noury, the only perpetrator of this mass atrocity crime so far held accountable. Her recent article “Anatomy of Hamid  Noury’s 198-page Life Imprisonment Verdict” describes the structure and key elements of  Stockholm District Court’s July 14, 2022 written verdict against Hamid Noury.

Hamid Noury was arrested on November 9, 2019 in Sweden for his suspected involvement in the 1988 mass execution of political prisoners in Karaj’s Gohardasht prison. Following his indictment on July 27, 2021 for gross war crimes and murder, he was tried in Stockholm District Court from August 10, 2021 to May 5, 2022. During 92 trial days the panel of two professional judges and four lay judges heard a total of 73 people (34 plaintiffs, 26 direct witnesses, and 13 expert witnesses or persons with special knowledge). On July 14, 2022, the panel unanimously found Hamid Noury guilty of both charges and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The verdict held Hamid Noury accountable for torture and murder as war crimes of 77 named executed prisoners and torture as war crimes of 22 surviving prisoners, all of whom were associated with the Mujahedin Organization. Hamid Noury was also held accountable for murder of 24 named executed prisoners associated with Marxist groups.
In her talk “Hamid Noury: From Arrest to Life Imprisonment” Deljou Abadi will present key details of Hamid Noury’s arrest, prosecution, trial, and verdict.
