Topic: Shahrokh Meskoob’s views on Nationality and Language

There will be a 40 min. movie on the life of Shahrokh Meskoob, followed by the lecture.
The lecture will focus on Meskoob’s views on Iranian national identity and Persian language. Meskoob’s discourse starts from the Muslim Arab invasion of Iran and continues to Reza Shah’s era. He discusses the ideas & functions of three schools of thought: “Hokama, Olama, Orafa”. Meskoob was an author, critic, translator & scholar, and has written about twenty books, many of which have been translated to English & French. Among these works are: Research on Shahnameh, Rostam and Esfandiar, Nationality and Language, Iranian Identity and Persian Language, Conversation in the Garden, Days in the Path, Mother’s Mourning.
Reza Mahmoudi, born in Mashhad, received his Bachelor’s degree in History from Ferdowsi University, Master’s degree in History from University of Houston, and PhD in Political Science from University of Texas, Austin. He was an active member of the Confederation of Iranian Students in the US. He taught at University in Iran, was a political activist, and left for the United States in 1983. He has also been a member of the following groups for many years: “Kanoon Andisheh”, “Center of Defense of Human Rights”, and “Poetry night” at the Persian Center.
